The first book is a ´all-in-one´ masterclass for creating textile art with your own signature:
Textile Adventures of Mirjam Pet-Jacobs
(english, german and french in one copy!)
This book starts with some information on general basic art theory followed by means to work with personal themes. The practical side consists of many assignments and workshops that you can do by yourself (or with friends ;-).
To clarify the process of making a piece of art, several of Mirjam´s pieces-in-process are discussed. And finally, there is attention paid to the finishing touch of a piece of art, like photographing and writing artist statements.
This book really covers it all, from starting a design to entering it professionally in a show.

Textile is alive! is a large, colorful book full of inspiring textile art and remarkable handiwork from the Netherlands and Belgium. Over 250 artists, designers and handiwork specialists with a passion for textile present their pieces of art, jewels, interior design objects, clothing (accessories), experiments and other textile expressions and give a short outline about themselves and their work.
An inspiring book where all sorts of techniques are addressed, including embroidering, knitting, crocheting, painting/printing, felting, knotting, sewing, punching, weaving, (art)quilting, mixed media and other (new) techniques.
Two pieces of my snowdyed fabric were also featured in this book!

I love both of these books. I just received Textile is alive and spent a VERY long time looking at the photos. I have had Mirjam's book for about six months and I find it a great way to get started on your journey. The concepts and exercises are a great way to learn the principles of design. ReplyDeleteI finally read "Wishcraft" by Barbara Sher this year. It's not in any way a new book, or even an art book, but still very relevant to working towards your dreams. I would prefer Textile Adventures, I believe.

One of my favorites for inspiration with wonderful colors and textures is "the Colors of India"..mostly photography. Would love either book.

ReplyDeleteI am fascinated by both of these books. I find that the European fiber artists have a whole different approach to their art. They seem to explore and expand possibilities in a different way from other artists.

ReplyDeleteBoth books are fastastisch. The book by Mirjam Pet-Jacobs is a good preparation for her exhibition in Breda next year. And the book "Textile is alive" is a must because there are so many good Dutch and Flemish artists in it. And both books are more than welcome ...

ReplyDeleteI didn't know that Mirjam had a book published!!! Wow!! The book that changed my life this year was Melanie Testa's "Dreaming from the Journal Page". I have wanted to learn to draw, paint, and journal and then translate my journal page to cloth. Melly's book is so wonderful in that it told me how to use the supplies I see in art supply shops. I am forever grateful for this book as it caused a dramatic change in me. Woo Hoo!!!

ReplyDeleteBooks both look really interesting. I have had a life long love affair with textiles with a fling along the way with watercolor painting. Visited Belgium during the watercolor years and one of my favorite painters is from the Netherlands.

ReplyDeleteMy mother and grandmother both were born with fabric scissors in their hands. I made my first dress when I was eight years old. Somehow I thought I wouldn't be able to make a living as an artist, so kind of gave up on fabric. It took me almost four decades to really start creating myself, using textile. So glad to find joy in it. I want to create art quilts that really are my own, instead of a copy of something I saw. Inspiration never hurts, though. :-) Thank you for the reviews and the give-away,
