First we dye, overdye, paint, stitch, resist, tie, fold, silk screen, stamp, thermofax, batik, bejewel, stretch, shrink, sprinkle, Smooch, fuse, slice, dice, AND then we set it on fire using a variety of heat tools.Quilt or Dyehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07194932090799851056noreply@blogger.comBlogger1215125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1436421032239107606.post-45706787208452931572017-06-26T01:00:00.000-04:002017-06-26T01:00:27.998-04:00Good night and good luck<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">With the closing bell of our blog, I was thinking of some of
the internationally recognized artists that have shared over the years. Here is
a short list:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: large;">Jane Dunnewold –Comlpex cloth<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Now these are the “famous people” but our day to day, month
to month blog posts were done by quilt artists and surface designers from all
over the world. Maybe not so famous or with name recognition but they were the
stalwarts who kept this blog going for seven years. There have been many
contributors who wrote on the topics you can access on the right of the blog
under the heading “Labels”. These were the women who volunteered as resident
and visiting artists and who kept this blog fresh, relevant, readable and
internationally recognized. I want to thank each and every person who contributed
to making the FIRE blog what is has become – an amazing resource for surface
design. The blog will stay up indefinitely as a “go to” resource for surface
design and art quilting. Thank you again to all of our contributors. It has
been wonderful being associated with you and this blog. </span><o:p></o:p></div>

Until I see you again . . . I'm sure we will bump into each other again somewhere on the net. The Fire blog has a wonderfully wide readership and I've enjoyed being a part of the fun. Beth found me because I love to comment! That was the cherry on top - starting conversations in the comments. Keep on commenting whenever you find blogs you like. There's no predicting where it will lead. <br />

Yes, there are gigantic safety pins woven into this copper bracelet. I can't wait to finish it! If some of the beads weren't rolled paper, I might have tried dipping this into liver of sulphur or singeing it with a blowtorch ... next time!<br />

A habit of years has to change :-(. I am honored that I have been a member of this creative group. And yes, sometimes it was difficult to find another idea to write about, as a lot has been handled during the years. Although I have to admit I knew what I wanted to talk about next year (grin).<br />
I wish you all the best - fellow FIRE members and readers - and no doubt we will meet again, either in cyber space or in real life.<br />
During January and February of this year Kelly and I talked about our e-book: Playing with Fire. We are working on our next book, which hopefully will be completed by the end of the year. If you want to be kept informed about our plans, please send an email to: info@what-if-textiles.com.<br />

I don’t remember exactly when I found the “Fire” blog, but
it was several years ago. I was
immediately inspired and excited by all the fabulous posts about various
surface design techniques from the folks who shared their projects and
experiments! I had not been using many
of the techniques for long, and really wanted to learn and try them for myself,
so I eagerly devoured each post, and tried many over the years. Then I was blessed to be asked to share some
of my experiments here, which was a distinct honor! <o:p></o:p></div>

From time to time, I have gone back into the archives to
re-visit various posts, and love that the wealth of wonderful information is
right at my fingertips, as if I had a whole library in my home to cull through.<o:p></o:p></div>

While I am sorry to see that the “Fire” blog is no longer
going to be adding posts, I know that I will be able to continue referring back

Thanks to Judith and Beth, the founders of this great, fun
place, for keeping the blog going for so long!
You have done a great service to your fellow fiber artists! I hope you will continue experimenting and
pushing the envelope in your artwork, and I will try to do the same, armed with
such a wonderful array of tools found right here on the “Fire” blog! </div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><strong>Story of the quilt</strong>--One of my favorite things to do when I'm home (besides working on my artwork) is looking at <em>the view out my window</em> into my backyard to watch the birds at my bird feeder. I particularly like to watch the birds in the wintertime when there is a nice sheet of snow on the ground. I like the stark contrast between the whiteness of the snow and the color of the birds. One particular winter day, ALL the birds on the ground were "those ugly" blackbirds EXCEPT for one beautiful red cardinal. I was really aggravated that the "ugly" blackbirds were dominating the bird feeders, eating up all my seed, and weren't even pretty to look at. After I had ranted and raved, I got to feeling bad about maligning the blackbirds. I realized that they need to eat too, and they can't help the fact that they aren't "pretty." That revelation led me to think about this on a larger scale. People who aren't considered "pretty" by society often have needs that aren't met--simply because of their appearance. We all can't be pretty.</span></div>

starting. I kept emailing her, "But, I'm not an artist." She kept
encouraging me; she NEVER gave up. And I can honestly say that
(artistically speaking) being a Resident Artist on the blog was one of
the best things that has ever happened to me.<br />
<br />
The blog gave me confidence, it introduced me to LOTS of new tools to
add to my artistic tool belt, and it afforded me the opportunity to meet
Judith in person and all of you in the blogosphere. Because of the
blog, I don't any longer have (too) much trouble saying, "Yes, I'm an
artist."<br />
<br />
Thank you, Beth and Judith, for all the hard work you put in to make
this blog SO successful. Thank you SO MUCH for including me in this
endeavor.Quilt or Dyehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07194932090799851056noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1436421032239107606.post-38019773608483931072017-06-05T01:00:00.000-04:002017-06-05T01:00:06.352-04:00Silk and Wool Landscapes - Beth Berman<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I got the idea for these from a woman who stitched layers of fabric together with decorative stitches. I thought about landscapes because I had already started a landscape series with batiked fabrics. These landscapes were matted and framed at 4.75 inches square.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">First of all thank you all for years of interesting and productive comments and participation in our FIRE blog. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I would like to talk a bit about layers. I have learned so much from my best friend Judith Brown about layering but I don't want to tell her story. She's been up to some interesting projects as well. One of the things I have been creating is a series of landscapes. I started out making silk and wool landscapes ( Monday's post) but then reverted to my old standbys, thickened dye and hot wax.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">I did do some batiking and I had some dye left over so I set up some screens to deconstruct. I have gotten to the point where I can print the screen three times side by side with very little evidence of where one screen started and the other left off. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDESxFwJ3gKl0J1NeoL1fgDESlF_wNbOwVUOp4WuR_DVJS72kFG7bTpFddLvuPHtrpK4Lli23vsr0JUE3Oj9qdx4xriuVc_hGh7hY0UDo-8WS6e1lYh-K0O2Pb48j2n4Bdj2OqiRwXKBI6/s1600/decon5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDESxFwJ3gKl0J1NeoL1fgDESlF_wNbOwVUOp4WuR_DVJS72kFG7bTpFddLvuPHtrpK4Lli23vsr0JUE3Oj9qdx4xriuVc_hGh7hY0UDo-8WS6e1lYh-K0O2Pb48j2n4Bdj2OqiRwXKBI6/s640/decon5.jpg" width="420" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">They came out very anemic and obviously needed more layers. My main goal was to try to create a "horizon" for a larger landscape. These were all 30+ inches.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Second set of screens to deconstruct</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuzcO5sBdUgq3PCf8NX712S0md94T4fj6dEG8hy7GoM526vFWL8bohJFsw564q-ECycK4ZJrOa434N-sfORyBQGxcD73r8SzeDUz9Hzid-8v_ONkAjxjL3LbICtbUm80XUrN0x2F2lGhi0/s1600/grass.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuzcO5sBdUgq3PCf8NX712S0md94T4fj6dEG8hy7GoM526vFWL8bohJFsw564q-ECycK4ZJrOa434N-sfORyBQGxcD73r8SzeDUz9Hzid-8v_ONkAjxjL3LbICtbUm80XUrN0x2F2lGhi0/s640/grass.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I also thought of the stitching in my silk and wool landscapes and thought about making thermonfax screens of wheat and grass. I was hoping for a real horizon with sky, fields and grasses. These are the two screens I had made.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">These are the finished pieces with one layer of deconstructed prints, the thermofax screens done in olive thickened dye and a top layer of the second set of deconstructed screens. I humbly have to admit , the results were more than I ever thought would be realized.</span><br />

<b>We are burning down the house in June. </b></h2>
We thank all of you for following our blog, making comments, and sharing your knowledge with us. We have loved our time blogging due to your participation and everyone has been enriched by your sharing. But, the time has come and we are going to burn down the house. June will be the last month with new posts.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
A Little History of the Blog</div>
"And Then We Set It On Fire" started officially in January 2011 although we had a few posts before then to get fired up. So much has changed and so much has stayed the same. We have always been about surface design mostly with fabric but sometimes with paper but our presentation format has changed through the years. We have changed Resident Artists and Administrators but some of us have been here through it all. We have had famous Guest Artists and Guest Artists like you and me who are famous to our friends and blog readers. I can't think of a surface design technique that we have not featured at least once and many have been presented by various artists getting different perspective. Personally I love that! We started with just 6 people (I think) and have gone international with both our readers and our Guest and Resident Artists. It has been an explosion!<br />
<br />
We have asked all our past Guest and Resident Artists if they would like to have a final post to let you know what they are up to now and to say a final goodbye. Please, tell us what you are up to now and feel free to tell us goodbye and let us know some of your favorite posts. As always, we would love to hear from you.<br />
<br />
We will leave the blog up for future reference. I don't know about you but I often go back to review a technique I haven't used for a bit. You are welcome to do the same. Thank you again for making this blog such a success.<br />

Well, I hope you have enjoyed reading my posts this
month! I touched on a variety of things
you can do with your fabric stash, and a few fun techniques you might want to
try! I hope you will check out the
tutorials and links I included… one of the best things for me about the
internet is the incredible wealth of information I have found to give me
inspiration and knowledge. So have fun,
play, try new things and enjoy the journey! Thanks for spending some time with me, and
thanks to Beth for inviting me to be a guest blogger again at “… And Then We Set

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">For my last
few posts, I thought I would give you a glimpse of some fabrics I have colored
using a technique that has been around for a long time – but one I struggled
with when I first started experimenting with it. Basically, it is using permanent marking pens
and high grade Isoprophyl alcohol. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">These were
fun, but I did not know they needed to be heat set before washing, and they
ended up fading quite a bit. So I put
the technique aside, even though I was still very interested in learning how to
use it. Happily, I have since revisited
this technique on muslin, rayon and cotton jersey and silk, and I found that heat setting
will keep the colors from fading when I wash them out!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Some time
ago, I found a couple of tutorials by Carol R Eaton. Carol is a great dyer and
she shares many of her techniques on her blog <a href="http://carolreatondesigns.blogspot.com/">carolreatondesigns.blogspot.com</a>. I visit
her blog regularly, and was intrigued by her tutorials on using permanent
markers and alcohol on silk. Here is one
I decided to try: <a href="http://carolreatondesigns.blogspot.com/2014/10/silk-sharpies-alcohol-yum.html">http://carolreatondesigns.blogspot.com/2014/10/silk-sharpies-alcohol-yum.html</a>. This one caught my interest because she used
empty containers to stretch the silk over, banding it in place, before she
applied the markers and alcohol. But I just wasn’t ready yet to try this
technique, so I filed it in the back of my mind for future reference.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">That all
came back this past month – I joined a group on Facebook that discusses
painting with alcohol inks… close to the same thing, although I didn’t see any
references to the markers, and I also did not see any examples of using the
inks on silk. So I did some searching
on-line, viewed a couple of videos, then I went back to Carol’s tutorial. Here are some of the results:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The scarf
above was my first – I drew lines across the scarf, and large dots. I tried doing it with the scarf folded in
fourths, hoping the marker would go through the layers, but ended up having to
go over the lines when I unfolded the scarf.
Then I used a pipette to drizzle the alcohol over the markings. Smelly!
Best to have your work area well-ventilated. Once the alcohol dried, I used my iron set to
about a polyester setting to heat-set the ink, then washed the next day to
remove the alcohol residue. It came out
far better than I thought it would! It
looked pretty crummy with just the marks on it, but totally transformed with
the alcohol… magic!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">I decided to
try Carol’s method for the next scarf. I
have a large number of empty dye containers in a couple of sizes, so I placed
several under the scarf, and secured with rubber bands:<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Then I drew
dots on the scarf with Deep blue, turquoise and lime green. Next I applied the alcohol, and waited until
the alcohol dried. Then I removed the

give this a try, you can buy the scarves at Dharma Trading Co.

<span style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;">So… after
learning how to make my Shabby Chic Scarves, then moving on to create several
Fabric Collages using the Sulky Solvy technique, I came across <a href="http://www.sewitalltv.com/content_downloads/Bowl_Instructions.pdf">these</a>
instructions for thread bowls by Wendy Hill, author and Textile Artist. I’ve been collecting thread ends and other
fibers for quite a while, not knowing what I would use them for, but knowing
that some day the right project would come along! The rest is history. These bowls are not super sturdy, but they
are real eye-catchers, and I think they are just the beginning for me.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14pt;">After I had
been making my “Shabby </span><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Chic” scarves for
awhile, I decided to try using the technique to create a fabric collage.</span><span style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span><span style="font-size: 14pt;">I love mixing textures and fabrics and
layering them, as I did to make the scarves, so why not use the same technique
to create a wall hanging? </span><span style="font-size: 14pt;">I could see
that there would be some slight modifications needed.</span><span style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span><span style="font-size: 14pt;">For instance, instead of sandwiching the
fibers between layers of Sulky solvy, I started by using fabric for the bottom
layer, and then I placed other fabrics, yarns and ribbons on top.</span><span style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Then I pinned a piece of Sulky solvy on
top.</span><span style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Then I grid stitched the layers
together, rinsed out the Sulky solvy, and dried the collage.</span><span style="font-size: 14pt;"> </span><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Once it was dry, I pressed it with a pressing
cloth (didn’t want the metallic fibers to melt!), then I fused it to a heavy
weight stabilizer, bound it and suspended by yarn loops on a piece of Juniper
wood from the wood pile.</span>

<span style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;">One of my
favorite ways to use silky fabric scraps, yarn, dyed cheese cloth and other fun
fibers is to make what I call a “Shabby Chic” scarf. As usual, I found a wonderful tutorial
on-line written by Sherrie Spangler, a fiber artist who has become a friend
first on-line, then in person over the past 5 years. Sherrie takes wonderful pictures, and is a
talented fiber artist who is very generous about sharing what she makes on her
blog sherriequilt.blogspot.com. If you
are not familiar with Sherrie’s blog, be sure to check it out for lots of
inspiration and ideas!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;">So I am
going to start this post with a link to Sherrie’s Scarf Tutorial – she has
written about her process several times on her blog, but <a href="http://sherriequilt.blogspot.com/2012/11/my-wisp-of-color-scarves.html">this
one</a> was the post that got me started. You will notice that Sherrie’s
scarves look different than mine. I tend to load my scarves with a lot of
different snippets, but Sherrie prefers to leave hers lighter and airier - two
different versions using the same process.
That’s the beauty of leaving the process loose to allow for individual
interpretations!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

together; pin in place. Place lining piece,
right side down, on top; pin. Mark the
curved corners using the composition book corners, to create the stitching
line. Start sewing 3-4” from the bottom
edge of one side, using a ¼” seam allowance.
Leave a gap for turning. Remove
pins as you sew, but be careful of pin holding the ribbon – if removed too
soon, the ribbon might shift and not be sewn down. Press seams, trim corners, then turn right
side out. Use a turner to poke corners
out. Press seams, turning the raw edges
of the turning gap in. Pin all outside
edges, then edge-stitch 1/8” from the edge.
Press. Insert composition book.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

quilters, I know you can imagine how to create a quilted piece to serve as your
outer piece. You can also make this with
a solid piece of fabric, but it will look better if you do some decorative
quilting on it before sewing the cover.
I did some with just solid pieces of fabric, and they are not as
attractive – see below:<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;">However, if you are just looking for a quick cover idea, this
will work and takes less time!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;">By the way, a quick tip on inserting the composition
book: slide one side into the flap, then
bend the other side back a little before sliding into the other flap. Once in straight, then gradually bring the
covers together and the book will slide into place. Another fun way to use up that fabric, and a great
gift item for anyone who journals or for a student taking notes in class!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

This book, like “It’s a Wrap II”, took me to an even higher
level of skill and potential. I have
always loved pottery, and even aspired to becoming a potter in my younger
years. But I found that making clay pots
took a skill set I didn’t possess, and I had pretty much given up on that dream
until I bought this book. The author
gives detailed instructions on how to create several pottery shapes, and it is now
possible for me to make “pottery” with cord and fabric that look much better
than any of the feeble attempts I made at creating pottery with clay back in my
youth! Here are some of the pieces I
have made using Warholic’s instructions:<o:p></o:p></div>

Before I found this book back in 2013, my only instruction
on how to make coiled fabric bowls came from a lovely tutorial I found by
Sherrie Spangler on her blog http://sherriequilt.blogspot.com/ ( search on coiled bowls and you will see several posts on her bowl making process). With photographs and easy-to-follow
directions, I began to make bowls, primarily to use up my ever-growing fabric
stash.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
By chance, visiting a quilt shop a couple of hours from
home, I spotted “It’s a Wrap II”, and had to have it. By now, I was ready to take my bowl-making to
a new level, and Susan Breier’s book gave me some valuable tools to do just
that. From how to make different shapes,
to ways to finish your project with loops, medallions and other embellishments,
this book will take you beyond basic bowl making to learning how to design your
own original creations. Beautiful examples will inspire you to go beyond your
comfort zone, and each finished project will leave you anxious to start on the
next one!<o:p></o:p></div>

following Sherrie’s tutorial for a while, I found two books that helped me to
expand my skill set to include more than just round bowls. The first book is “It’s a Wrap II” by Susan
Breier. I got this book in July, 2013
and it taught me how to make different shapes, and how to make lids as well as
some neat new ways to finish the bowls with medallions, loops and other
finishes. Sometime in 2014, I found the
book “Sewing Pottery by Machine” by Barbara Warholic, and her techniques took
me to a whole new level. I will be reviewing
both books later this week if you are interested in learning about them.
Meanwhile, I would love to hear from you if you have tried making bowls or have
any questions or comments about the topic. Happy coiling!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%;">I started my
journey as a dyer almost 20 years ago… hard to believe! In the beginning, I pretty much stuck with
learning how to tie-dye t-shirts with traditional patterns. But at some point, I started to experiment
with other techniques, and discovered I can make it up as I go along…
freedom! Drizzle dyeing comes under that
heading, and I thought it would be fun to share it with you. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

Dyeing is a technique that uses an eyedropper or pipette to drizzle the dyes
over a silk scarf that has been scrunched up on a project board covered with
plastic, then left to batch for about an hour before rinsing and washing. Here are a couple of examples of my Drizzle

downloadable tutorials and tools to help, and she has created a closed Facebook
